Don't forget the similar and common abuse of "physically" as an intensifier.

On the positive side, VR hype seems to have killed off the previously common use of "virtually" to mean "almost" or "effectively".

My senior editor pointed out an **awesome** "literally" misuse today. It was in an article about Giants manager Felipe Alou refusing to accept an apology from the radio announcer who made racist statements about Caribbean ballplayers. It quoted someone as saying, "I would literally give my right arm to be able to apologize to Alou." Dang! Maybe the guy's left-handed but still. Quite a sacrifice!

Here are a couple of good ones
-- mute or moo for moot, as in it's a moot point

Personally, I don't give a rat's whisker about the distinction between "its" and "it's" (i know darn well the correct usage and deliberately misuse it anyway, so kill me), but the thing that sometimes irritates me is some peoples' propensity to hyper-apostrophize any word ending in "s", plural or not, posessive or not.

We're talking about ADULTS here, and it is all too common.

An extreme example: One time, in a big city, I saw a fast food joint with a hand painted sign on the side that _literally_ advertised:

BURGER'S FRIE'S SHAKE'S

OK, "burger's and shake's" I can forgive, but "FRIE'S"?! Come ON, people! You're making me want to scoop my own eye's out with spoon's!

According to a prominent dictionary, the two senses are both correct. Well, I guess that's what makes it a pet peeve _du jour_ and not a lifelong obsession. ;)

I totally agree with the 'literally' rant though. Remember the recent political editorial about indecency on television? "My child's head literally exploded". Ahem. (yeah, it was satire, but still funny)

I am currently afroth over how folks use "literally" as a sort of general purpose intensifier. As in, "I literally cried my eyes out." (No you didn't--that would be really gross and possibly physically impossible.) "She was literally beside herself." (Unless we're talking a little cloning mishap here . . . I doubt it.) Anyone else got any good ones they've heard recently?
